Endurance: How to Keep Your Soccer Team Ahead of the Pack
The beauty of soccer is its accessibility to many levels of skill, especially for youth leagues. Travel and premier teams can control the level of talent they have on their team, but you can't control for the level of talent your competitors have.
The Great Equalizer; Endurance
Soccer is a long game with lots of running. The team with the most hustle and endurance can sometimes make up a skill level difference of a competitor. This becomes even more important in tournament play where a team might play four games in two days. For instance, "in this nonstop game of 90 minutes or more, endurance. You need to be able to run six or more miles, sprinting, jogging and sometimes going backwards at full speed if you are a defender" says LiveStrong.com.
The best time to build your endurance is before the season starts, an continuing to build as the long season wears on.

Staying Fit Between Soccer Seasons
It's good for young athletes to take some time off to recover between seasons. Taking time off does should not mean sitting on the couch watching TV. Staying in shape during the winter months can help avoid injury once the next soccer season starts up.
Once
you stop playing and training, muscle cells lose most of what they have gained quickly
(10 days to two weeks), but the cardiovascular system loses its gains more
slowly. Staying in shape during a break requires a mix of frequency, intensity,
and duration. Find out how to keep in shape with this great article.
Playing Soccer in Cold Weather
We've had a great and relatively warm soccer season here in New Jersey. With the last few weeks of the
season coming up the weather is poised to turn colder. While much of Europe plays soccer though the winter months, we typically move indoors to smaller 7-7 or smaller type games and training.
Preparing for your last few, cold games
Preparing for your last few, cold games
- Dress in warm socks and thermal underwear, or spandex-type underclothing, avoid cotton
- Be sure to adequately warm up before your games. It is easier to get injured during colder weather
- Warm up with Sweats and and a jacket
- Wear warm headgear
- Bring a water repellent jacket for the sidelines if raining or snowing
- Drink plenty of water. Even in cold weather you can dehydrate
Even in cold weather soccer can be fun if your properly prepared. So make a list of the things you'll need and be prepared.

Which Sports Players Run the Most?
Which sports players run the most? To any soccer fan, or soccer mom or dad there is not doubt. Soccer. In fact the difference is startling. The major Pro and school sports of baseball, football and basketball can't hold a candle to the distance covered by by most soccer players, withe the exception of a keeper. Only Tennis comes even remotely close.
Though not as large as the pros, youth soccer players from U11 up often play on fields that are as large as or larger than a football field. Even if these players only cover 75% of the distance it would mean they are covering 21 miles in a 4 game tournament over two days! (if they play the entire game) More than the distance of a half marathon, even without playing the entire game.
Who runs the most? Midfielders, particularly right midfielders. Keepers run the least but hey, they do have a pretty crazy job. On a side note, only 2% of that running is with the ball.
So join us in a season starting, blood pumping festival of running, kicking and scoring on August 24th and 25th at the Roxbury Kickoff Classic and be amazed at what your kids can do. Sign up Now

Heat Exhaustion, Play Smart
The past few weeks in NJ have provided us with some staggering heat. Temperature's in the 90's have been pretty consistent, as has relatively high humidity, a potentially deadly combination. Although it appears we'll get a break next week, there is still plenty of summer ahead. As you and your child venture out to final summer tournaments and get ready to start your travel teams camps, be aware of the environment they are playing in.
Playing in high temperature without proper hydration and supervision can prove to be anywhere from bothersome to dangerous. Make sure your child has plenty of water or sports drinks available to them both before and during games and practices.
Have a safe warm up to your upcoming season by practicing sensible precautions. Your child will play better and be safer.
There are many sites and resources available on how to recognize heat exhaustion. Make sure your aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and fatigue. Here are a few sites to visit.
